With a world-renowned R&D base, a hotbed of entrepreneurial talent combined with academic excellence – Oxfordshire offers the conditions to create and grow thriving organisations across many a sector, with manufacturing an industry of no exception.

A space where engineering and access to high tech materials align with reputational accolades – including host of part of the iconic ‘Motorsport Valley’ – Oxfordshire offers the fast-paced and cutting-edge innovation required to support truly thriving manufacturing businesses.

But in an industry that moves oh-so-quick, manufacturing organisations – particularly those on a smaller scale – face challenges such as Industry 4.0 technologies and the struggle of keeping up-to-date with technological integrations to compete with larger-scale competitors, along with ever-changing priorities and regulation around areas such as sustainability in manufacturing practises – that also align with changes in consumer preference, such as for greener products.

Over recent months, manufacturing leaders in the South East have been urged to sign up to Made Smarter, the UK Government programme helping SMEs embrace digital technologies for growth.

Following the success of the programme in the North West and other regions, Made Smarter has now expanded to the South East in order to drive growth in manufacturing SMEs and help them boost productivity through new industrial technologies.

Made Smarter South East’s team of experts provide advice and support to manufacturing businesses, makers and creators on how to switch to advanced and automated technologies to help improve productivity, reduce downtime, and boost competitiveness.

This one-year £1.55 million pilot programme runs until March 31st 2026, providing match-funding (up to £20k), specialist advice, leadership training and student placements. Helping small and medium-sized businesses – and the people in them – keep their competitive edge, while boosting the economy in the South East.

Registration is now open to access fully funded expert advice, leadership training, student interns and up to £20,000 technology grants to help manufacturers and makers drive growth, productivity and sustainability. Find out more about Made Smarter
